Geobear are incredibly proud to announce that Rachel McLean, an employee at Geobear, successfully completed a charity sleep out event this month, raising more than £600! Rachel represented Geobear in the event held at the Totally Wicked Stadium, St Helens on Friday 15th March. .
The event was held as part of the YMCA Sleep Easy Week, a week dedicated to raising awareness of youth homelessness which took place from 8th to the 15th March. The campaign was first launched by the YMCA in 2010 and since then has seen over 6000 participants sleep on the streets to raise money to help young homeless people rebuild their lives. Since its launch, over £1million has been raised by the amazing volunteers like Rachel.
Those taking part in the challenge give up the comfort of their own bed for the night to experience what homeless people up and down the country face every day and raise money in the process. YMCA are dedicated to combatting homelessness and want this annual event to act as a show of support for young people facing homelessness. The organisers hope that it will make these people feel less alone and know that there are people out there who care and who are taking action to put a stop to this crisis.
Rachel took part in the challenge with her husband, Kevin and together they raised over £300. Geobear then matched the sponsorship already generated, taking our final donation up to £650.00. The funds raised through Rachel’s sleep out will be split 3 ways between the YMCA St Helens Sports, Teardrops and Saints Community Development Foundation. The money raised will be used by the charities to support their ongoing efforts to help homeless people. YMCA St. Helens has over 100 staff and volunteers working tirelessly in their local community so, Rachel’s contribution is incredibly valuable.
Rachel said of the event,
“I volunteered at Teardrops to help with their Christmas preparations and saw first hand the great work that they do. It inspired me to take part. It was a great event, and offered a small insight into what the homeless face night after night. The charities all work really hard in the local community to support the homeless, it’s been good to know we have helped in some way.”
