Subsidence and the Heat Wave

(July 13, 2022)

The UK has been braced for another weekend of record breaking temperatures.

Many subsidence experts around the UK will be studying the effect the heatwave may have on insurance claims.

If you live in an area of clay soils keep a close eye on any changes around your home.

Subsidence is not without warning signs. Some of the most common include:

  • Cracks in walls
  • Sinking floors
  • Windows and doors sticking
  • Noticeable leaning of property
  • Extension moving away from property

An extended heatwave may see a rapid worsening of subsidence damage for those properties built on clay soils and in close proximity to mature trees.

Roots from nearby trees and vegetation take up water from the soil, causing this to dry out and exacerbating any shrinkage.
