Treatment of Suspected Softened Clays Below SW Wing Wall
Project Overview
The project involves the stabilisation of a bridge abutment wingwall and the treatment of suspected softened clays below the SW wing wall at the Boots Enterprise Zone in Nottingham. This intervention was necessary to ensure the structural integrity and longevity of the infrastructure.
Scope of Work
Geobear was contracted to perform ground stabilisation using their specialised geopolymer injection system. The scope required geobear geopolymer material to be injected at three points through the wingwall foundation, from 1.5 meters to 5 meters below ground level.
Methodology
The stabilisation process was conducted using the following steps:
- Site Preparation: Establishing the site and setting out the injection points as per the design
- Drilling and Injection: Drilling to the specified depths and inserting 12mm injection tubes. A two-part geopolymer resin was then pumped into the surrounding sub-soils. Continuous pumping was done until sufficient soil compaction was achieved, as verified by laser-level monitoring.
- Verification: Movement at the foundation surface provided a reaction or ‘flicker’ on laser levels confirming successful soil compaction.
Conclusion
Geobear delivered the work in one day stabilising the asset which was verified by laser level.
Their methodology ensured minimal disruption and a high degree of precision in soil stabilisation, crucial for the long-term stability of the infrastructure asset at the Boots Enterprise Zone.
